Venetia Williams has had a blistering start to 2014, which is no surprise as her runners usually come alive at this time of year, due to their exceptional ability to flourish on heavy ground.
It was a huge shame that Sandown's Tolworth Hurdle card fell to the elements as I believed she had many excellent chances. There are any number of her chasers that I think can score shortly, granted suitable placement - never a problem for the most astute of trainers.
One of her proposed Sandown runners appears today at 1.50 Leicester under conditions which he has never faced before, yet I believe is perfectly suited to.
Renard D'Irlande did this column a favour on his seasonal debut at Uttoxeter back in November, and then disappointed somewhat at Newbury next time, but the ground was too lively on that occasion.
Genuine soft ground at around 3m is what Venetia Williams' sound jumping grey needs. He is exceptionally well handicapped on a number of pieces of past form, and might just be nearing peak fitness on this his third run of the season.
That he is not favourite is surprising, and down to the early-price vultures who have piled into David Pipe's chasing debutant Edmund Kean. He will love the ground and is a point-to-point winner but this is a tough assignment on chase debut for a trainer who is having a fairly quiet spell.
Venetia Williams is certainly not having a quiet spell, and at 4/1 Renard D'Irlande can reward freebets.com followers yet again.
