The 32Red Casino handicap chase at Huntingdon today is a weak race and provides Moonlight Maggie the perfect opportunity to break her duck. Having her second outing over larger obstacles, Tom George’s seven-year-old mare would have won at Catterick last time but for a mistake two out. She kept on under the urging of jockey Aodhagan Conlon and failed by a head to the catch the winner, Pistol Bach.
The run, on 28th December, showed a marked improvement on her only previous race over fences when she finished a distant fifth of nine runners in a novice race at Towcester in November. Moonlight Maggie faces six modest opponents in the 3.25 Huntingdon, none of which make much appeal and she’s confidently expected to land the prize.
The main danger would appear to be Brandon Thomas, a winner last time out for trainer Nick Gifford after dropping down the weights. He carries a seven penalty for that victory which may prove too much this time. Venetia Williams saddles Brown Brook, an eight-year-old gelding still looking for his first win in eight starts under rules. The son of Bob Back looked beaten when stumbling and slipping up on the final bend in heavy ground at Plumpton 19 days ago.
