Useful hurdler Mr Watson can get off the mark over fences in the Weatherbys Private Banking Handicap Chase at 3.50 Catterick today.
Union Jack Dycy heads the market for this 3m1f 110yds chase at 5/2 with most firms, but his best efforts have been on soft ground and heavy going at Catterick Bridge today could be his undoing. Real Milan (11/4 with Betvictor and Boylesports) shouldn't be discounted, but Donald McCain's nine-year-old looked weary when runner-up on soft ground at Wetherby last month and conditions are much more testing today.
Mr Watson's best efforts over the smaller obstacles have come on heavy ground, winning firstly at Plumpton and then on his handicap debut at Cheltenham. Conditions underfoot have not been to his liking since then and this extended stamina test in the mud should bring out the best in him on his first crack at a handicap chase. 9/1 looks like value then and it becomes even more encouraging when factoring AP McCoy into the equation, making Mr Watson a confident selection.
Triggerman could be a threat on his best form having ran well for third in last season's Welsh National, but is probably best watched for now. Everaard is down to a nice mark, but has had little time to recover from a hurdling success at Doncaster on Thursday and Mr Watson looks to have a nice opportunity today.
