Chris Pea Green can get the better of hot favourite Saphir Du Rheu in the Totepool National Spirit Hurdle at 3.10 Fontwell today.
The market leader is entitled to the utmost respect after a hat-trick of victories culminating in a Welsh Champion Hurdle success at Ffos Las three weeks ago, but odds of 2/5 about the mount of Daryl Jacob make little appeal.
Chris Pea Green was last seen finishing seventh in a competetively ran Betfair Hurdle at Newbury and did best of the held-up runners to get within seven lengths of winner Splash Of Ginge. The Gary Moore-trained five-year-old is a general 8/1 chance today with a number of firms including Bet365 and William Hill and that looks like each-way value on the basis of his recent efforts.
The selection was within a length of Pine Creek in over 2m at Ascot and put in another solid effort for third at Newbury when giving 9lb to winner Ifandbutwhynot. Chris Pea Green was again in the final shake-up in the Ladbroke hurdle and it's only a matter of time before he gets back to winning ways having been twice successful over hurdles as a juvenile.
A step up in trip today could be the catalyst fo Chris Pea Green to get a head in front and this stiffer test is likely to bring some improvement.
