Top weight Stormy Weather can get the better of favourite Cool Sky in the 2m Handicap Hurdle at 3.25 Newcastle today.
Cool Sky is open to improvement after getting off the mark over hurdles at Musselburgh last month, but that race was run at quite a steady pace and today's test will be tougher. Donald McCain's five-year-old has a 6lb hike in the weights to contend with today and a top price of 7/4 with Betvictor looks a little too short for me.
Stormy Weather usually goes well at Newcastle, although was out of his depth in the Grade 1 Fighting Fifth Hurdle on his last course start. The eight-year-old is far more competetive around this track at this level though, making odds of 8/1 with William Hill and Bet365 worth a small investment considering what he's facing today.
Twice a course and distance winner, the selection has also placed here twice including a narrow quarter length defeat on his only flat start over 1m4f. There is further encouragement about his chances as conditional jockey Nathan Moscrop takes off 7lb and was on board for the Stormy Weather's recent success at Wetherby, so he could well outrun his odds today.
