Most eyes will be on The Curragh today as undoubtedly the highlight of Sunday’s racing is the Irish 1,000 Guineas card, but there are also three summer jumps meetings on these shores.
Dr Richard Newland advertised his special training skills with cheap purchase Neverownup at Worcester in the week, and he bids to add to that hurdle victory in Fontwell Park’s handicap chase at 5.10. He holds multiple entries in the coming days, and rates as banker material today. However the 5/4 doesn’t make great appeal.
It is north of the border we go for a bet, as a horse that I have kept tabs on for just under a year appears in Kelso’s valuable John Smith’s Handicap Chase at 4.55, and is a great price at 12/1 with a number of firms including Bet365 and Boylesports.
Full Jack had his first two runs in this country for Pauline Robson and Scottish National-winning owner Raymond Anderson Green at Kelso in October. Firstly, he was close up behind course specialist Maggio (now rated 138 over fences), and two weeks later finished 20 lengths behind Green Flag (now rated 142).
Both of those runs were in blinkers, and on both occasions shaped as if he was a strong stayer who would thrive in a big field handicap, and Raymond Anderson Green will have purchased him with a view to one day emulating his dual Scottish National winner Merigo.
He won a good handicap at Auteuil in April last year, and then was travelling into contention in the extremely well contested and valuable Grand Steeple-Chase De Paris almost exactly a year ago, before unseating.
In just five runs in this country, and only three of them over fences, Full Jack has dropped a whopping 21lbs in the handicap. If he is to emerge as a Scottish National horse one day, then he needs to be outclassing this lot off a rating of 122, with the blinkers going back on.
Early signs are that he is being nibbled at in the market. Given trainer Pauline Robson can produce a horse to run well fresh, and along with the owner, loves to have winners at local course Kelso it is best advised to get on early.
Kelso 4.55 – Full Jack 12/1 (generally)
