Another underwhelming Bank Holdiay Monday where British horseracing is concerned but Redcar stage a decent card with the feature race being the £25k Happy 10th Birthday Racing UK Zetland Gold Cup at 4.15. The one mile two furlong contest is only a shadow of the race that was one of the leading handicaps during the 1960's and 1970's, won in 1973 by the Bill Elsey-trained Peleid who went on to win that year's St Leger at Doncaster. While there will be no Classic winners in this year's renewal ( no 3-year-old entries ) it provides the Luca Cumani-trained Ajmany with an excellent opportunity to go one better than when a creditable second at Newmarket on his seasonal reappearance.
Finding only the Jim Crowley-ridden Niceofyoutotellme a neck too good at headquarters the son of Kheleyf would probably have won in another 100 yards and should appreciate the extra furlong at the north-east seaside course and looks certain to prove hard to beat under Andrea Atzeni despite racing off a 6lb higher mark. The biggest danger to the 4-year-old is likely to come from the Godolphin runner Ennistown who is sure to improve for his recent Lingfield outing when fourth behind Soviet Rock off the same mark of 100. The mount of Mickael Barzalona won three of his five starts last season, the best of which was a three quarters of a length victory over Croquembouche at Pontefract last September.
Top weight Sennockian Star will have his supporters after two good recent efforts but Mark Johnston's gelding may struggle to give weight away off a career-high mark and is unlikely to trouble the selection who can be backed at a guaranteed 3-1 with Bet365 and Coral.
