No present owner has a better record in tomorrow's Prix Du Jockey Club (French Derby) than HH Aga Khan V1 who has so far registered seven victories in the French Classic most recently courtesy of Darsi in 2006 and the same trainer-jockey combination of Alain de Royer-Dupre and Christophe Soumillon can make it win number eight for the leading owner with outsider Shamkiyr who is general 16-1 chance, a price available with Betvictor.
The son of Sea The Stars is certainly bred in the purple being out of the Listed-winning mare Shemaya who won two of her only three starts on the racecourse and although this is a massive step up in class for Shamkiyr he could easily surprise some better fancied rivals from what should be a good draw in stall two. A promising second on his debut in a Saint-Cloud maiden last November the colt failed by only a nose to win on his seasonal reappearance at Maisons-Laffitte but made no mistake back at Saint-Cloud earlier this month coming home eight lengths clear of nearest rival Histrionique over tomorrow's trip of 1m 2f. While that run may be a long way from Classic-winning form the selection is open to plenty of improvement and is the value alternative to likely hot favourite Prince Gibraltar.
Winner of the Group 1 Criterium De Saint-Cloud as a 2-year-old the Rock Of Gibraltar colt impressed when winning the Group 2 Prix Greffhule on his first run at three but this hold-up performer may need luck in running in what traditionally can be a rough race and is worth opposing at a short price. Second favourite Karakontie has a terrible draw (15) to overcome while British challengers The Grey Gatsby and Ayrad will struggle to emulate the Michael Jarvis-trained Holding Court who took the race back in 2000 for his Newmarket handler.
