You might have to bear with me while I explain the reasons for backing this 12/1 shot on Tuesday evening – and there a few – as the horse in question has pulled up on his last three runs and fell heavily the time before.
You may wonder if I indeed have got a ‘scooby-doo’ when I suggest securing 12/1 about the Martin Keighley-trained once-smart chaser Havingotascoobydo in Southwell’s 6.10.
Just over two years ago he was sent off the well-backed favourite of a competitive 2m 5f handicap chase at Cheltenham off a handicap mark of 141. On Tuesday evening he competes in a 0-110 class 4 2m 4f handicap chase off his lowly rating of 109.
Since January 2012, not much has gone according to plan, he has had various ailments as periods off the track suggest, but one more than one occasion has suggested that a portion of the old ability remains.
On his last run seven weeks ago he was well backed in a better race, which suggests that he has shown some spark at home at his Gloucestershire base. He was held up on that occasion which didn’t seem to enthuse him all that much.
It might be that the first-time blinkers and tongue-tie combination and a possible switch to more prominent tactics (which have been successful in the past) will see Keighley’s gelding in a much better light against vastly inferior opposition.
The conditions of the race are absolutely perfect and if he can’t run well here then he is one to finally scrub off my shortlist, after three years of being on it!
It will be the first time he has carried my cash since October 2012, and at 12/1 it is well worth chancing that with everything in his favour Havingotascoobydo can reward his connections long-standing faith in him.
