Carrying top weight holds no fears for Beat The Tide in the 2 mile Yorkshire Outdoors Adventure Experiences Handicap at 7.50 Thirsk today.
Available to back at 11/4 with Betvictor, the bay gelding races off his last winning mark today and looks to have a good opportunity to score on only his second attempt at this trip.
Beat The Tide won over 1 mile 5 furlongs at Ayr last summer off this rating and had been well held since, but was third and within a length of the winner over 2 miles at Newcastle last month. Both of the horses which edged him that day were older and at an advantage at the weights, while the winner Jan Smuts reopposes 2lb worse off so their is every reason to expect further improvement from our four-year-old selection today. Add to the mix Connor Beasley's 3lb allowance and the fact that trainer Michael Dodds is fitting cheekpieces for the first time and Beat The Tide looks to have solid claims.
Elsewhere in the field, Medevil Bishop has won at this venue, but his last effort over a 2 mile trip was poor and the consistent Longshadow looks to be the principal threat with a visor preferred to cheekpieces after a good run at Redcar in April.
