The three day Northumberland Plate meeting at Newcastle is a summer highlight for so many. It got underway on Thursday, continues on through Friday night and culminates with the ‘Pitmen’s Derby’ on Saturday – a race that looks fiendishly difficult to solve.
Should you have a fancy for the big one at the weekend however, then I suggest accruing some funds by doubling up on two horses trained by two of the very best, and not just of those based in the north.
David O’Meara has quickly, and correctly, built up a stellar reputation with improving horses in his care, but it is with one of his longest servants that he can notch up another win in Newcastle’s 1m handicap at 8.20 on Friday night.
Anderiego was once rated 95 a little over a year ago, and having slipped down to 80 he ran a race full of promise for next time out at Leicester a week ago. Having pulled clear with another well treated rival, he has been raised to 82, but races here off a mark of 78 before that rise comes into play.
He has recorded both his career wins at York, and so Newcastle, with its long straight should be just fine. 13/8 with bet365 after overnight support.
Brian Ellison is no stranger to winners at his beloved Newcastle, and in particular at this meeting, but it is a horse that he sends north of the border to Musselburgh that catches the eye of all his runners tomorrow.
Alaskan Bullet has shown his best form on the all-weather, but last time at Ayr, something clicked on the turf. In a much stronger race than the one he contests at 3.45 tomorrow, he missed the break but then cruised up to rivals rated far superior to his mark of 74. In fact he was unlucky not to come out on top, and gets to race of the same mark, despite a future rise of 3lbs.
As opposed to three rivals rated in the 90’s and two in the 80’s at Ayr, he faces just one horse superior to him according to the handicapper tomorrow, in the 78-rated Jofranka.
He rates the bet of the day at 5/1 with Stan James to blaze a trail in the 5f handicap.
Musselburgh 3.45 – Alaskan Bullet 5/1 (Stan James)
Newcastle 8.20 – Anderiego 13/8 (bet365)
