Currently available at 14-1 with a number of firms including Ladbrokes and Coral the John Gosden-trained Cornrow is a strong fancy to lift Newmarket's Betfred Cambridgeshire in just under three weeks time providing the 94-rated son of New Approach makes the final cut for the nine-furlong contest as the four-year-old needs twenty odd above him in the weights to defect in order to avoid elimination, in which case all ante-post bets on the horse would be refunded.

Unraced as a juvenile the colt made steady progress after a promising sixth on his debut at Nottingham last August winning his next two starts, both on Kempton's all-weather surface, and carried on where he left off with a most impressive victory at Haydock on his seasonal reappearance comfortably beating Yourartisonfire by three and a half lengths without being extended. Off a 7lb higher mark Gosden was desperate to get another run into the lightly-raced chestnut before taking his chance in one of the most competitive handicaps of the season at headquarters but admitted that the seven furlong trip of Ascot's opener on Saturday was far from ideal for a horse who is expected to excel over 9 or 10 furlongs.

Sent straight to the front by jockey William Buick Cornrow travelled well until headed a furlong from home and just when the 4-1 favourite looked like being swallowed up he rallied to such effect that instead of finishing a head and short head third behind Safety Check and Redvers the horse would have been back in front in another 50 yards. The extra two furlongs of the Cambridgeshire and the guaranteed strong gallop should be just up Cornrow's street and providing he is lucky enough to get a run is confidently expected to follow in the footsteps of the stable's Halling, Pipedreamer and Tazeez by winning the cavalry charge before going on to better things.
