Alan Kelly tips Godolphin's Outstrip to win the Joel Stakes at 3.15 Newmarket

Friday's Group 2 Shadwell Joel Stakes has produced one of the most competitive renewals in recent memory in which the majority of the field of 14 can be given some kind of chance on their best form in the one mile contest boasting prize money of £109,000. In a close betting heat the Roger Charlton-trained Captain Cat could go off favourite on the back of a most impressive victory at Haydock last time when running out a comfortable winner of the Group 3 Superior Mile while Tullius and Wannabe Yours are two others who have strong claims to head an open market, the former on his fourth place behind Toronado in Royal Ascot's Queen Anne Stakes and the latter who will attempt to gain his fourth straight victory of the season.

Hors De Combat, Investec Derby fourth Arod and the bang in-form David O'Meara-trained Custom Cut are three more runners who will have their supporters but at the 9-1 available with Coral the most interesting contender is the Godolphin representative Outstrip. The three-year-old boasted some strong form as a juvenile last year including a three length victory over The Grey Gatsby ( winner of the French Derby and Irish Champion Stakes this season ) in Doncaster's Champagne Stakes as well as a half length defeat of Giovanni Boldini in the Grade 1 Juvenile Turf at the Breeders' Cup.

The son of Exceed And Excel was not right when finishing last in the Qipco 2000 Guineas on his seasonal reappearance but bounced back at Royal Ascot when finding only Kingman and Night Of Thunder too good in the St James's Palace Stakes, beaten a little over three lengths. Although last of four on his most recent start in Goodwood's Sussex Stakes Outstrip was never going to beat Kingman and Toronado for a turn of foot in a contest that developed into little more than a two furlong sprint. With a decent pace virtually guaranteed at headquarters tomorrow the mount of Adam Kirby looks sure to go close if producing his best form and unlike many goes into the race a relatively fresh horse making his current odds excellent value.
