The Jim Goldie-trained Caledonia looks to have a great opening this afternoon and is nicely priced at 16/1 with Ladbrokes to be back in the winners enclosure for the penultimate race at York. The 7-year-old took advantage of a tumbling mark of 66 to land a soft ground Musselburgh handicap June and while not in the frame both starts since, the bay gelding's latest effort was better than the bare result.
Caledonia finished fifth at Newcastle when last seen in September, in a race won by a hugely consistent performer in Moscato who went on to complete a hat-trick over the same course and distance earlier this month. The selection acts best with some give in the ground and had nothing like those conditions that day, but will appreciate going described as Good to Soft (Soft in places) at York this afternoon.
Jordan Nason will be in the saddle today and his 5lb allowance effectively reduces Caledonia's official rating to that of his last success. That should bring the horse firmly into the equation and the step up in trip will bring Caledonia's stamina from his hurdling days into play, while there are no guarantees that market leader Kashmiri Sunset will stay the distance.
It all points to bold bid and an each-way bet is advised at 16/1 with Ladbrokes paying 1/4 odds the first four horses.
