Up and coming trainer Dr Richard Newland hit the jackpot back in April when his Pineau De Re did us a massive favour by landing our 28-1 tip for the Crabbie's Grand National at Aintree and while it is impossible to follow that victory in the world's most famous steeplechase the stable can take another stamina-sapping contest at Sedgefield on Thursday afternoon in the shape of the Sean Magee's Sedgefielders Durham National with Royale Knight.
Darly Jacob, a Grand National winner himself when partnering Neptune Collonges to victory in 2012, has been booked to partner the eight-year-old at the north-east venue and the son of King's Theatre should take plenty of beating in the £20k contest run over 3m 6f following a highly encouraging seasonal reappearance when a creditable fourth over hurdles at Chepstow last month. The gelding was a most impressive winner at Kelso last December when racing off a mark of 112 and despite a rise of 12lb since then there is surely a decent prize to be won with this consistent stayer.
Third behind the classy Shotgun Paddy and Carruthers in Warwick's valuable Betfred Classic Chase off his current mark back in January, a reproduction of which should be good enough to take the Sedgefield marathon for which he can be backed at 4-1 with several bookmakers including Bet365 and Paddy Power. The main danger to the selection is likely to come from the lightly-raced Dan Skelton-trained Many Stars who, with just the one run over fences, is open to plenty of improvement and could have been let in lightly off a mark of 120. The mount of Ryan Mahon is a standout 5-1 with Coral who offer money back on all fallers in UK Jump races.
ADVICE - 1 Point each-way Royale Knight 4-1 bet365
