At 3.00 today there is a heavyweight match-up between the winners of perhaps the two most iconic staying races in the racing calendar – Grand National winner Pineau De Re versus Cesarewitch winner Big Easy.
Pineau De will not be as fit as Dr Richard Newland can get him, as number one target will be the Grand National again, and so of the two you have to side with Philip Hobbs’ Big Easy – a good winner of the Cesarewitch last month in the cheekpieces he wears today, a course winner off this handicap mark, and the stable are flying.
At 6/1 with William Hill he is well worth an each-way investment. But whatever you do have on the Ces hero, I suggest you have double on David Pipe’s Katkeau. It is not usually my style of punting to back the two at the head of any market, and both each-way to boot. But I can’t see how Katkeau and Big Easy will be out of the frame.
Katkeau had three starts for the Pipe stable two years ago, and on every occasion he was very well backed to win off this kind of mark. For various reasons things didn’t quite go his way, but every cloud has a silver lining, and he is on the same mark as when running an incredibly eye-catching race in Haydock’s Betfair Fixed Brush Hurdle two years ago. A blunder at the top of the home straight did for his chance there, but clearly he will be well tuned up for his racecourse reappearance, and while there isn’t much juice in his price of 4/1 with Ladbrokes, any winner is a good price!
There is a slightly different slant to this article as not only am I recommending backing Katkeau at double the stakes to whatever you have on Big Easy today, but I also suggest backing Katkeau at 14/1 with Bet365 for next weekend’s Betfair Fixed Brush Hurdle.
A win today would earn him a penalty that just about gets him into the weights proper for next weekend’s big race, which the Pipe stable have won with Grand Crus (with a penalty for winning at the Open meeting,) Dynaste and Gevrey Chambertin, and it could well be the grand plan for Katkeau too.
It might be an agonising wait during the week as he would need a few to come out to get in the race, but a number of horses above him in the weights have other plans, and David Pipe has six horses above him in the weights that he could pull out to help Katkeau’s cause.
Katkeau 2pts EW – 4/1 (Ladbrokes)
Big Easy 1pt EW – 6/1 (William Hill)
Haydock Betfair Fixed Brush Hurdle
Katkeau – 14/1 (Bet365)
