The Class 3 Pertemps Network Handicap Chase at 2.45 Kempton will be run on soft ground with conditions decribed as heavy on the bend bend adjacent to lake at the Surrey track. Benefit Cut and Frontier Spirit shold handle the ground, but both like to race prominently and may not get the lead as easily as desired with 9/1 chance Real Milan in the field.
The bay gelding won twice over fences for Donald McCain on bottomless ground at Carlisle and Ayr before posting several creditable effots in defeat prior to moving to the Anabel Murphy stable. Having made the running to go down by a short head to Shadows Lengthen at Haydock on his penultimate start, Real Milan put together a satisfactory round for third in a Grade 2 at Cheltenham when last seen in April. Both of those front-running efforts came on good ground, but the selection is very much a horse that needs to get his toe in and today's going should suit him perfectly.
Lord Landen is the current market leader, racing from 3lb out of the handicap, while Tenor Nivernas has been absent for almost two years so is perhaps best watched for now. Should Richard Johnson be able to dictate the tempo aboard Real Milan, then it's difficult to see the horse coming up short, having ran to form when fresh in the past.
