An 11-strong field takes to the gates for the 2.50 Betfred Mobile Handicap Chase at Newbury this afternoon, the three-mile contest featuring an initially difficult card to pick a winner from based on recent performances, although proven Freebets.com racing tipster Alan Kelly deciphers 7/1 On Trend to continue trainer Nick Gifford's successful opening to 2015 on Wednesday.
Gifford's success has been shared by jockey Tom Cannon who rode both Fairy Rath and Theo's Charm to victory for two triumphs in three outings following the New Year already, Cannon impressing and riding with confidence to boost in preparation for potentially a fifth win of 2015, this time riding nine-year-old Bay Gelding, On Trend.
On Trend was a well-held seventh behind Bertie Boru over the extended two and three-quarter mile outing at Newbury in November last year despite leading early on under Daryl Jacob, but tracked the leaders in both meetings around that with Cannon aboard to make the 7/1 Betfred price very encouraging having bagged fifth when forced to compete from 5lb out of the handicap at Sandown earlier in January.
While On Trend will benefit from taking a dip in class, Bob Tucker is the easiest to back with bookmakers although Charlie Longsdon's 5/2 favourite will face a stiff challenge over the three-mile distance as a novice in an experienced field, despite a solid third at Sandown.
Two wins in November give a better card illustration to David Pipe's Smiles For Miles, while Colin Tizzard has not finished lower than fifth in five outings this year and will keep an eye on Brendan Powell aboard Ohio Gold on Wednesday.
