Betting for the Class 3 European Breeders Fund/Thoroughbred Breeders Association Mares Novices Chase at 3.00 Ludlow is headed by Midnight Belle who is yet to get a head in front over fences despite running with credit on her last three starts. But at the 7/4 generally available, Tom Symonds' 8-year-old is far from a sure thing and the value in the race lies with 6/1 chance Lily Waugh.
The King's Theatre mare was a largely consistent hurdler, so it was no surprise to see her go close on her chase debut over 2 miles 5 furlongs at Wincanton in November, where the horse was a runner-up and had today's market leader 3 and a half lengths behind.
Lily Waugh was then significantly upped in trip on her most recent start at the same venue and jumped fluently enough despite fading to mid-division towards the end of what proved an inadequate 3 mile 2 furlong slog for the 8-year-old. With the selection's stamina stretched there, a return to a more suitable trip today should put her bang in the mix as she re-opposes Midnight Belle only 3lb higer in the weights than when they last met.
Of the remainder, Loyaute may get involved at the business end having finished unner-up to Ptit Zig at Exeter in December, but was pulled up on Boxing Day and needs to bounce back, while Doyly Carte's sketchy jumping let her down when falling on her second attempt over fences at Catterick last month.
