Nick Mitchell’s Phone Home went very close to winning at Newbury in November and could be worth chancing at 25/1 with bet365 for the two and a half mile handicap chase at 3.40 today.

The 8-year-old gelding has drifted a little in the betting this morning but punters are better off taking the current price as bet365 gives a best odds guarantee.

He makes a quick re-appearance after pulling up in a similar event at Newbury six days ago but that form can be ignored as his saddle slipped and jockey Tom Scudamore was unable to see out the finish. Noel Fehily gets the ride today and could go close if recapturing that November form when beaten a head by Bertie Boru over two mile six and a half furlongs. Phone Home was caught in the final furlong after jumping the last seven lengths clear. Today’s shorter distance is another plus factor as his only career win was over two mile five furlongs at Ffos Las last May.

The obvious dangers are Owen Na View and Morning Reggie who headed the betting market overnight. Fergal O’Brien’s runner makes a quick return after an easy win over two mile one furlong on Saturday but was a distant fourth on his only attempt beyond two and a half miles. Morning Reggie is well in despite a penalty for his convincing win in a small field at Warwick last week and has a decent chance if staying the longer trip today.

Westwood Point drops down in class after pulling up in the Greatwood Gold Cup in February, it was his first run for 14 months which makes the eight-year-old something of an unknown quantity here. Trickaway is another that commands respect, Philip Hobbs’ seven-year-old has been improving with each run this season but the handicapper may have got a hold of him with another increase in weight.
