Newbury's Be Wiser Insurance Spring Cup on Saturday afternoon has attracted several of those who took part in Doncaster's Betway Lincoln last month including the neck winner Gabrial who will attempt to follow up off a 6lb higher mark in tomorrow's £50k contest run over the straight mile, but it is the horse who finished runner up in the Betway Spring Mile on the same day, Buckstay, who makes more appeal on this occasion for trainer Peter Chapple-Hyam and jockey Jim Crowley.
The five-year-old Lawman gelding has been a model of consistency since going down by a head at Yarmouth in September 2013, the only two below-par performances coming on soft and heavy ground respectively at Chester and Ascot last season. On ground described as good or good to firm Buckstay has put up several creditable efforts in competitive handicaps without getting his head in front, but it is surely just a matter of time before the horse gets his just deserts and that could well be the case at the Berkshire venue off what looks a reasonable mark of 94.
Arguably, the horse's best performance of 2014 came in the Betfred Cambridgeshire at Newmarket when, off a 2lb lower mark, he finished fourth after leading approaching the final furlong of the 1m 1f cavalry charge, and over Newbury's slightly shorter trip should reverse placing's with the winner there Bronze Angel on 10lb better terms. Finding only the progressive Chetez too good on his seasonal reappearance at Doncaster when partnered by 7lb claimer Tom Marquand, Buckstay should appreciate being re-united with Jim Crowley and with that race under his belt is fancied to go one better at the 8-1 available with most bookmakers.
Lincoln winner Gabrial could prove a tough nut to crack, as the six-year-old is still 5lb lower than when achieving a rating of 111 in 2013, while the unexposed Dream Spirit may well be ahead of the handicapper, and this hard-pulling four-year-old should be suited by the anticaped past pace and is respected from a stable that does well with this type of horse.
1 Point-each-way Buckstay 8-1 (bet365, William Hill, Coral)
