Sandown's fixture on Friday features some quality Flat action including the bet365 Classic Trial at 3.00 in which the Charles Hills-trained Commemorative is likely to go off a short priced favourite following the son of Zamindar's creditable close up seventh in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf last season, with Ryan Moore's mount for Ballydoyle, Cape Clear Island, the biggest danger after the late defection of French challenger Grey Lion.
The most valuable race on the card however is the £95k Group 2 bet365 Mile at 2.30 which can go the way of the Richard Hannon-trained Shifting Power at the guaranteed 7-2 available with the sponsor. Unbeaten in two starts as a two-year-old the Compton Place colt won Newmarket's European Free Handicap on his debut at three before finishing a three length fourth behind Night Of Thunder and Kingman in the Qipco 2000 Guineas.
No match for the latter in the Irish 2000 Guineas on his next start the mount of Richard Hughes still had the rest of the field well beaten off and following a seven week break Shifting Power was sent to France for the Group 1 Prix Jean Prat at Chantilly, going down by a length to subsequent Queen Elizabeth 11 Stakes winner Charm Spirit. Possibly feeling the effects of several tough races Shifting Power failed to show his true form on his final start of the season at Goodwood and after a decent break is fancied to produce his best in Sandown's one mile contest.
With a number of his seven rivals at their best with plenty of cut in the ground, particularly Top Notch Tonto and Breton Rock, the main danger is likely to come from two horses who progressed from handicap company last season in the shape of Bow Creek and Here Comes When, but if Shifting Power can reproduce his Guineas form of 12 months ago the others should be fighting it out for second place.
