Saturday's Group 1 Al Shaqab Lockinge Stakes at Newbury should go the way of last season's Qipco 2000 Guineas winner Night Of Thunder if the colt runs up to his best on his seasonal reappearance. But, with a record turnout of 18 runners the mount of James Doyle does not represent outstanding value at a top price 3-1 with William Hill so for the day's nap it is the valuable Al Zubarah London Gold Cup (open handicap) thirty five minutes earlier which makes more appeal.
The one mile two furlong contest has attracted a field of 13 lightly-raced three-year-olds and, off what could turn out to be a lenient mark of 93, the horse who is taken to lift the prize for trainer Roger Charlton and jockey Ryan Moore is the Khalid Abdullah-owned Time Test.
The well-bred son of Dubawi had three races as a juvenile and such was the expectations of the horse that his debut came in a Conditions event at Newbury, going off the 8-11 favourite against a previous winner in Stec. A neck defeat at the hands of that horse was no disgrace as the mount of Jenny Powell enjoyed a huge advantage in the way of experience, and with that race under his belt Time Test made no mistake on his next outing recording a comfortable victory in a Sandown maiden race.
Unable to match strides with the highly rated Latharnach (beaten two and three quarter lengths) on his final start as a two-year-old Time Test is expected to prove a different propositions at three, being out of the high-class mare Passage Of Time, and could easily prove much better than a handicapper as the season progresses. The owner's other runner Dissolution is likely to cause the selection most problems but needs to step up on a narrow Newmarket victory last month to defy a 2lb higher mark.
