Tipped up at 3/1 via our twitter feed yesterday evening, Taghreeb has been the subject of sustained support and can now be backed at no bigger than 9/4 with those best odds available at Skybet for today's Class 4 J Barbour & Sons Handicap at 3.50 Newcastle.
On his sole 2-year-old season start, the Dubawi colt edged Persian Bolt and next time out winner Moonvoy in a 7f Salisbury maiden on Good to Firm ground and did not see a racecourse again until making his reappearance in a handicap at Redcar last month. Taghreeb didn't get the best of breaks that day but recovered well to mount a challenge inside the final furlong before staying on to lead at the finish, so today's additional 2 furlongs could bring even more improvement.
Kinema has found the frame all 3 starts this term and is feared most following a good second at Nottingham last time, while it would be no surprise to see Dance King come on for a modest return to action at Ripon. The hat-trick seeking Final Countdown must concede weight all round and is 13lb higher than two races back and Red Warrior may have missed his chance after going up 3lb for finishing second at Windsor last time out.
With the remainder of the field having questions to answer and the current Good to Firm going likely to suit our selection, Brian Meehan's lightly-raced 3-year-old can make it 3 from 3 starts, so long as there is not too much rain at Gosforth Park this afternoon.
