Luca Cumani found the right level for Four On Eight last time and the colt looks the one to beat in the Nursery Handicap at 4.55 Newmarket today.
The youngster was given two tries over seven furlongs in the summer before Cumani pitched the son of Lawman against weaker opposition over a longer trip. The switch worked well and Frankie Dettori brought the juvenile home under an easy ride, justifying favouritism to land his maiden at Windsor.
Today’s Newmarket race will test the stamina of the inexperienced field but should prove no problem for Four On Eight who can go on to win at his first attempt in handicap company. Dettori’s mount faces opposition in the betting market but the 5/1 on offer at Betfred is too good to miss.
Godolphin’s Nice Future looks like going off favourite, the Dubawi colt showed promise when finishing third at Newbury on his debut and won easier than the winning margin of neck when landing 1/6 odds in a four-runner event next time. It will be tougher in handicap company and it remains to be seen how Nice Future will react when asked a serious question.
Mark Johnston saddles Laafiraaq who impressed with an easy win at Hamilton last time and is another that should handle the nine-furlong trip. It was his first run on turf after a couple of tries on the all-weather and it’s possible the Cape Cross colt preferred the livelier ground that day. There will be more give at Newmarket and while an attractive alternative, we prefer the value of backing Four On Eight at the bigger price.
