Odds of 10/1 didn’t mirror the confidence Kim Bailey had in ABBREVIATE before his career debut in a Huntingdon bumper back in April according to an early season stable tour, and the legendary trainer was disappointed that he was beaten into second place there behind 25/1 chance Brave Richard. On the face of it, the form could have been seen as questionable, but the race has since produced a heap of winning form.

The four-year-old son of Derby winning Authorized made his return to action back in early October, in a Warwick novice hurdle on good ground, where he was a bit unlucky not to win, just beaten a neck by Canicallyouback who got away from the final two flights of hurdles a little better than him. Again, the form has been backed up since.

Bailey then found the ideal opportunity for his youngster to get off the mark at Southwell. Stepped up in trip and encountering soft ground for the first time, he jumped and travelled well throughout the contest and had the race in his back pocket from some way out, pulling nineteen lengths clear at his own leisure. It was an impressive performance and although carrying a 7lb penalty in Leicester’s 1.05pm novices’ hurdle today, his rivals don’t appear to have the form in the book to trouble the likely favourite if he brings that level of ability to the track again today. The “heavy” ground could be a negative, but it is the same for the others.

David Pipe’s stable has been doing a little better in recent weeks and the markets this morning are suggesting his five-year-old by King’s Theatre called Chic Theatre is the chief threat to today’s best bet. The grey has some decent bumper form in the book and is bred for this job, but he needs to improve considerably to get up to the level of Abbreviate, who should just have too much firepower. Alan King’s Handsome Sam is a newcomer from the point-to-point fields and could be anything, but again he is going to need to be pretty sharp to deny Kim Bailey’s horse on his first outing under rules.
