Last year’s winner of Cork’s 2.15pm Kerry Group Hilly Way Chase Felix Yonger needs to improve upon his third place effort in the Clonmel Oil Chase last month in order to justify likely favouritism on Sunday. But in a trappy looking contest, perhaps Gordon Elliott’s BRIGHT NEW DAWN can take advantage of favourable weight terms and confirm the form that saw him turn a corner and finish in front of the Willie Mullins runner when second in the same race.

That may not be enough for the eight-year-old, there is stiff opposition in the field. Twinlight is capable of beating most or any two miler on his day and the conditions of the race will suit him. However, he was pulled up last time and tends to dip in and out of form whenever he well pleases, so is far from a safe bet on any given day. Hidden Cyclone is the biggest threat to all if he arrives on the best of his form. He slammed Days Hotel and Flemenstar in the Grade 2 Fortria Chase at Navan in early November and his blend of stamina and ability to act on testing ground - along with a pinch of the top class when at his best - makes him a huge player here. Days Hotel re-opposes in this and Henry De Bromhead’s ten-year-old has the form to go well in places, but has a bit to find with one or two of these.

BRIGHT NEW DAWN only had his first start for Gordon Elliott in October, sometimes it takes a while for a horse to settle into his new surroundings and indeed for a new trainer to get a grips with a new recruit. But this horse has always been a real athlete and maybe now he can kick on and get a win on the board on the back of a much better effort last time out. He gets weight from most of these, will enjoy the ground and although he hasn’t visited Cork before, he does go well right-handed.
