It would have been easy to forgive AGUEROOO failing to win his four-timer even if he had underperformed. He did get beaten, but he certainly did not underperform and just seemed to be undone by a filly who had the run of the race a bit more than he did. Modest reversed the form there and deserves her win, but Aguerooo remains in excellent form and is taken to land his fourth victory in the last four weeks, in Lingfield’s 2.45pm five furlong handicap on Wednesday.
Kieran O’Neill gets the leg up this time and is an in-form jockey. The retirement of Richard Hughes will ensure the Irishman will gain a lot more opportunities at the Richard Hannon stable this year and he is in good form so far this season, with two winners ridden for Scott Dixon and another two for Ed De Giles; that pair landing a 16/1 winner at Wolverhampton on Monday. So Aguerooo has a suitable partner and returns to the scene of his second win of his treble, over the course and distance at the end of December.
A mark of 86 is starting to find something approaching the ceiling of his ability, but there is still room to believe he can be highly competitive from that mark. Given that he is such a straight-forward horse, perhaps connections could instruct O’Neill to ride the horse a bit more forward this time from stall one, just to ensure he doesn’t encounter any in-running issues and he is extremely fit at the moment too, so getting home won’t be a problem if adopting that style of running.
Gwendolyn was a good winner at Wolverhampton last time out, but hasn’t run since December 12th and others have the fitness edge. She is also yet to race at Lingfield. Alshaqee was fifth when strongly fancied last time but had excuses that day so is a clear danger, as is Kadrizzi, who just about comes out on top on the clock but is having to give 10lb+ to all of his rivals, which balances things out a bit.
