The 3.25pm handicap chase at Wetherby on Tuesday makes for an interesting tactical affair over the two mile and four furlong distance on what will be pretty heavy going. With pace likely to come from the likes of Ballybolley, Dartford Warbler and Throthehatch, perhaps this could be set up for a closer who stays well and that horse could just be the Nicky Richards trained CULTRAM ABBEY.

Cultram Abbey comes into this race on the back of three runs this season, the middle one was a disappointing effort at Newcastle, but either side of that the lightly raced nine-year-old has displayed the ability and potential to be very dangerous from his current handicap mark.

He started the season on a mark of 125 and only went up 2lb for finishing a solid second to Shimla Dawn at Carlisle back in November. The handicapper dropped him to 126 after his poor run and left him on that perch after another sound second over three miles earlier this month up at Ayr. In a slowly run race there, Cultram Abbey finished strongly and given another hundred yards he probably would have won.

That might lead one to believe that he needs every inch of three miles, but it could also be that he simply needs a stronger pace to run at. Given the likelihood of a good pace over this distance and the fact that the ground will be heavy, Cultram Abbey and top northern jockey Brian Harding have the chance to get into a rhythm behind the leaders and hopefully be a in a position to find plenty for pressure later in the race as others are weakening.

Nicky Richards hasn’t the best record at Wetherby over the years but has two good chances there on Tuesday and his stable has been in good form this month, with wins from the highly promising Baywing and Un Noble, along with One For Harry. This is an open and interesting contest, but Cultram Abbey is coming to the boil nicely and if he can put his best foot forward, this race presents a tactical test which is likely to suit him well.
