Donald McCain’s experienced eight-year-old UBALTIQUE has gone through periods of being in and out of form through his career. One of the most difficult challenges facing any trainer is keeping their horses healthy and enjoying their job and at times this gelding hasn’t quite been operating at the level he’s capable of. Last time out at Haydock Park however, he turned a corner under Aidan Coleman - who was riding him for the first time - and scored an easy win in a class 3 event over the extended two mile trip.
A 7lb rise is the handicap probably won’t be enough to stop him running another big race in Tuesday’s 4.40pm handicap chase over two miles and four furlongs this time. Ubaltique has failed to win in four previous attempts at this particular distance, but he certainly wasn’t stopping at the finish last time out and you’d have to say the application of a tongue tie has the desired effect in helping him finish off the race strongly.
YES TOM scored a decent win over hurdles last time which came as a bit of a surprise. He is experienced over fences but carries a much higher handicap mark over the larger obstacles so it is hard to know how well treated the horse is. The Nicky Richards trained BERNADELLI was unlucky to unseat his rider last time out but was in form before that and is certainly respected again here.
Those would appear to be the main dangers to Ubaltique, who goes to Ayr with every chance of continuing a good spell for the Donald McCain stable. He has a 21% strike rate at Ayr and has already trained ten winners in 2016, with plenty of his string running well in defeat. The tip today should have the race run to suit and should give a good account of himself.
