Kempton’s 6.10pm 32Red Handicap over one mile and two furlongs is a small but select field of seven horses and the top pair in the market, Razor Wind and Maverick Wave, have a fair stranglehold on form, but maybe the William Muir trained TRUTH OR DARE is nicely set at the bottom of the weights to give them a race of it at bigger odds.
John Gosden’s Maverick Wave is the classiest horse in the race with an official rating of 110, 8lb clear of his nearest rival Razor Wind on 102. Two “Listed” quality performers, it is far from a simple and straight-forward task to win a handicap race from those kind of marks. Either could win, though. Maverick Wave was second in a Group 3 contest last time out and was a very useful horse who could just prove to have too much class. Razor Wind is a very consistent horse who should keep improving even as a five-year-old, considering he has relatively few miles on the clock.
You couldn’t rule out the William Haggas trained Our Channel either, but he is unproven at the course. Truth Or Dare is also unproven at Kempton but he has some solid form at Lingfield and on the clock at least, he has the figures in the book to really trouble the market leaders considering he is getting 12lb and 20lb respectively from them. William Muir’s stable has been pretty quiet of late but he did have a 16/1 winner at Lingfield last month and has a good chance of landing another win with this horse, who is positioned well to take advantage of a low weight if handling the conditions. Martin Dwyer rides this track well and is an agreeable partner to today’s tip.
