There is a lot to be said for confidence being high, whether in human or equine form and one horse riding the crest of a wave at the moment is SRUTHAN who bids to follow up his win in the Irish Lincolnshire Handicap last time out in the Group 3 Gladness Stakes at 3.50pm at the Curragh on Sunday afternoon.
Today’s tip won this very race two years ago and certainly knows his way around this neck of the woods. In a race lacking much by way of definitive untapped potential or unexposed talent, he will prove a particularly hard nut to crack if maintaining his recent level of form.
Sruthan has raced at the Curragh racecourse six times in the past, winning on three occasions and course form is important. He handles testing ground well which will also play a considerable part given the weather conditions. He can also be considered “race fit” in a race where some horses are making their seasonal reappearance, and the 6-year-old gelding makes the most appeal now that the Ger Lyons trained Endless Drama is a non runner.
Amongst his chief rivals Gordon Lord Byron is a classy Group 1 performer at his absolute best but at the age of eight those days may well be behind him now. He is respected again, but has a bit to do here. Aidan O’Brien’s Dick Whittington is the most intriguing contender in the field but wouldn’t be among the brightest of stars in the yard on what he has shown to date and while he could be good enough, the more recent form of Sruthan is preferred.
Flight Risk takes his chance again having won this at 50/1 last year, but was that a flash in the pan? It remains to be seen, but he of course has each way claims again, as do The Happy Prince and Joailliere. But Sruthan is the grown up, solid option and he is unlikely to be far away come the finish.
