Betfair Chase Prediction:

CONEYGREE to Win at 9/4 with Betway

The 2015 Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Coneygree makes his eagerly anticipated return to the racecourse this Saturday as he is pitched straight back in at the deep end for the £209,000 Grade 1 Betfair Chase at Haydock Park.

The nine-year-old was a sheer revelation during the 2014-2015 season, pummelling the best around into submission with a relentless front running style unseen before from a novice.

Cue Card is just about holding sway as the betting favourite to follow up his victory in this race last year and the year before, but he was a little lacklustre in the Charlie Hall Chase last time out and although this horse has bounced back to the top from poor runs in the past, there will come a point when his powers begin to wain and age starts to catch up with him.

Trainer Colin Tizzard seems adamant that the race at Wetherby has brought him forward, but beforehand he stated he had Cue Card spot on for his return run, so there are some mixed vibes in that regard.

In any case, Mark Bradstock will have left no stone unturned in his bid to get Coneygree back to his very best. He’s been off for just over a year but looked exceptional when he returned to action at Sandown Park last November and arguably he should be the favourite for this, yet he’s available at around 2/1 with most firms, but a 9/4 top price with Betway.

Remarkably, Coneygree is very lightly raced considering his achievements and age. Saturday’s race will only be his twelfth career start and the injury he had was more “niggly” than serious, so it’s unlikely too much of his ability will have been dented.

Seeyouatmidnight is a likeable horse and a solid staying prospect, but is likely to be out of his depth here, while Silviniaco Conti is not the force of old.

Irish Cavalier is a quality horse and won’t be too far away, but at 9/4 Coneygree looks the one to be on for Saturday’s big race. Champion jockey Richard Johnson getting the leg up is a big bonus for Coneygree backers and the pair could be a match made in heaven.
