2017 Epsom Derby Betting Tips

There are many things that are classically British. The Yorkshire pudding, fish and chips. A nice pot of tea. There’s the FA Cup and the Queen. Deeply ingrained in British nature is the Derby.

Epsom is one of the big weekends of the year in British sport and this weekend looks like it’s going to be another cracking raceday.

Dating back to 1779 the Triple Crown will draw over 150,000 people to Epsom Downs and many more will be watching live on ITV. But who will they be backing? And who should they be backing?

2017 Epsom Derby Favourites

Cliffs of Moher

Cliffs of Moher is on track to go into the weekend as favourite for the Epsom Derby with 888sport offering 4/1.

The runner heads up Aidan O’Brien’s team, who will be looking for his fourth win in six years. It’s been a successful month for the horse, having won the Dee Stakes in Chester by a length and a half.

It wasn’t as comfortable as the stats suggest though, at one point the win in the trial wasn’t looking likely. But the win has slashed his odds and he’ll certainly be a contender this weekend.

Cracksman

There’s talk that Cracksman will have to improve greatly to win the Investec Derby, but that doesn’t stop the likes of Coral and William Hill marking him down as joint favourite.

The John Gosden trained horse did well in the trial last month, seeing off Permian and putting him firmly in the frame. A son of the great Frankel, the horse will be ridden by Frankie Dettori who had great success with Gosden’s Golden Horn two years ago. Same again?

Permian

Permian went toe-to-toe with Cracksman in the trial, with the latter just coming out on top. However, at 11/1 with Ladbrokes, Permian looks great value to cross the line in first. He knows how to raise his game with impressive wins in the Dante Stakes and at Newmarket and many see this runner really challenging the favourites.

Best Solution

After winning the Lingfield Derby, Best Solution is looking in fine form and a good outside bet for the Epsom Derby. At a price of 12/1 with most bookies, he is a horse working very hard and at great value.

He’s impressed trainer Bin Suroor and having already taken Lingfield ahead of Glencadam Glory and Tartini, he could be ready to surprise Epsom.

Eminent

Going in at third favourite for the Derby, Eminent is looking in great shape having won the Craven Stakes at Newmarket in hugely impressive fashion.

Beating Rivet and Benbatl the son of Frankel has pushed himself up to 13/2 with many of the UK’s best bookmakers and given his trainer plenty of confidence.

The Frankel factor could push him to the win, but Cracksman also has plenty of the great steed in him too. It’ll be an interesting contest between the two.
