A Preview/tip For Saturday’s Northumberland Plate At Newcastle: Withhold To Land Another Gamble In Saturday’s Northumberland Plate

The Roger Charlton-trained Withhold landed a massive gamble for owner Tony Bloom in last season’s Cesarewitch at Newmarket and the five-year-old can punish bookmakers once again by taking Saturday’s Northumberland Plate at Newcastle.

The Brian Meehan-trained Bacchus came to the rescue of bookmakers last Saturday when the Jim Crowley-ridden 33-1 chance foiled a sustained gamble on the Godolphin-owned 2-1 favourite Dreamfield in the 28-runner Wokingham Handicap at Royal Ascot. But those firms who have laid the well-backed Withhold at odds as high as 8-1 for Newcastle’s valuable Northumberland Plate this weekend may not be as lucky with the five-year-old set to provide owner Tony Bloom with another big pay day following the son of Champs Elysees win in last season’s Cesarewitch as the well supported 5-1 favourite.

A best price 4-1 with Sky Bet, Ladbrokes, Coral and Boylesports the ex Charles Hills-trained gelding will be having just his third start for his current handler and could yet prove better than his mark of 99. If able to handle the Tapeta surface of the Gosforth Park venue the mount of Robert Winston must have a great chance of winning a second major staying handicap before stepping up to Group or Listed class.

Withhold has gone up 12lb since winning Newmarket’s 2m 2f contest but finds himself only 5lb worse off with the third and fourth horses – Lagostovegas and Dubawi Fifty – while the seventh home Byron Flyer enjoys just a 7lb pull for a beating of over thirteen lengths. As at headquarters last October Withhold has almost certainly been laid out for this Stobart Rails and Civils-sponsored ‘ Pitman’s Derby ‘ for some time and it would be no surprise to see the horse go off as short as 5-2 come post time of 2.05pm on Saturday afternoon.

A 33/1 chance with boylesports the Jim Goldie-trained Sir Chauvelin looks best of the outsiders following his creditable second to Dash Of Spice in Royal Ascot’s Duke Of Edinburgh Stakes last week and is worth an each-way saver at a massive price.
