One In A Milan To Prove One In A Million In Welsh National

When the entries came out for next month’s Coral Welsh National I suggested on our Twitter feed that the 14-1 on offer with Ladbrokes was far too big about the Emma Lavelle-trained Shotgun Paddy for Chepstow’s stamina-sapping marathon, a price that has now gone due to the seven-year-old being tipped by Pricewise in today’s Racing Post. The son of Bryan Boru is being trained with this race specifically in mind and looks certain to run a big race with the course and ground sure to suit this relentless galloper, the one doubt however is the strong possibility that the gelding could end up having to shoulder top weight, a daunting prospect in one of the most gruelling races of the National Hunt season.

None of the six horses above Shotgun Paddy in the Welsh National weights are guaranteed to make it to the post on December 27th and with that in mind it could be worth having an each-way investment in a 25-1 chance who will relish the likely conditions, the horse in question being the Evan Williams-trained One In A Milan. Sent off an unconsidered 50-1 chance in last year’s race the son of St Leger winner Milan finished an honourable fourth and will be better off at the weights with the 1-2 on that occasion, Mountainous and Hawkes Point, after which the nine-year-old was in the process of running a cracking race in the Crabbie’s Grand National until falling at the 22nd fence.

The thorough stayer was given a spin over hurdles at Chepstow earlier this month acquitting himself well to finish third, beaten just two and a half lengths, and off a reasonable mark of 136 can improve on his performance of 12 months ago especially if putting in a more fluent round of jumping. Williams stated in his trainer file that One In Milan would be entered for every long distance handicap chase this season but if the horse is to win a big prize it will surely be at the Welsh venue in a month’s time.

Recommendation – 1 point each-way One In A Milan 25-1 Generally
