Athletic Bilbao vs Malaga preview, betting tips and prediction: Misery could be compounded for Malaga at San Mames
February 22, 2018
Athletic Club – commonly referred to as Bilbao outside of Spain – better pull their socks up or they could be the victims of a very undesirable piece of history at the end of the season. The Basque side are one of three founding clubs (the others being Real Madrid and Barcelona) to have never been relegated from La Liga. While they’re ten points clear of the relegation zone, they’re on a dangerously poor run that could easily see them fall below the surface.
Therefore, this weekend’s match against Malaga could be dubbed a relegation six-pointer. It certainly is Malaga anyway. Anchored to the bottom of La Liga, they might be the unluckiest team in the country. They can’t catch a break. On course for a rare win against Valencia last weekend, they collapsed in the last ten minutes and lost 2-1. It was the first time since November that they had conceded two goals.
Scoring goals remains the problem for Malaga, who are seven points from safety. They’ve found the net just 15 times in 24 games. Interestingly, three of those goals came against Bilbao when they met at La Rosaleda back in September. They couldn’t even manage to secure a win then, drawing 3-3. We can’t see the reverse fixture being a goalfest.
