Atletico Madrid fell to only their third La Liga defeat of the season before the international break when a late strike from Enes Unal stole all three points in a smash-and-grab victory for Villarreal. It came as something of a surprise given the form that Atletico were in.
They had just progressed in the Europa League, dumping Lokomotiv Moscow out at the last 16 stage with an 8-1 aggregate win. Diego Simeone will be keen to get back to winning ways this week when his side welcome Deportivo to the Wanda. Down in the doldrums of Spain’s top tier, Deportivo, managed by Clarence Seedorf, haven’t picked up a point on the road since January.
That’s not going to change this week. Antoine Griezmann has been in flying form in 2018 and that’s largely down to the impact of Diego Costa. The returning hero rejoined the club in the winter transfer window after cutting ties with Chelsea long before that. He was in brilliant form for Spain during the break and will be expected to add to Deportivo’s woes here.
