Back Liverpool Everton BTTS draw in 228th Merseyside derby stalemate

Everton make the short trip to their noisy neighbours Liverpool hoping to break their Anfield hoodoo, where the Toffees haven’t won since before the turn of the century when Kevin Campbell’s early goal decided the derby in 1999. Overall, Everton have won just one of their past 20 meetings with their local rivals, a 2-0 win against Roy Hodgson’s Liverpool in 2010.

However, a much-improved Everton side come into this game buoyed by the red-hot form of the Premier League’s top scorer Romelu Lukaku, who became the first Toffeeman to score 20+ goals in a season since Gary Lineker struck 30 in 1985-86. The burly Belgian striker Lukaku is an attractive 13-2 with Paddy Power for the first goal.

Klopp’s men nicked the derby at Goodison Park just before Christmas with a winner in the dying seconds by Sadio Mane. The Senegalese is 24-5 with unibet to open the scoring again. At that stage of the season, the Reds still harboured hopes of winning the Premier League, but their title dream has evaporated after some ropy form against the league’s lesser lights such as Hull, Bournemouth and Swansea to name but a few.

Klopp is sure to have Liverpool fired up for this one and has won both his derbies in charge so far. Crucially, Everton will have to make do without one of their best defenders, Seamus Coleman, who suffered a broken leg playing for the Republic of Ireland on Friday.

Liverpool have lost only once in their last 22 Premier League home matches, just that horrible reverse to Swansea. Nevertheless, the visitors from just up the road shouldn’t be underestimated either, Everton are on a bit of a roll themselves – a narrow defeat at 2nd placed Spurs, their only setback in their last 12 games.

However, the formbook goes out of the window in these blood and thunder derby games. I’m siding with the outsiders here to make it difficult in the derby for Klopp’s charges. Everton can definitely nick at least a draw, so I recommend the hcp+1 Everton at 11-8 with betway, while BTTS DRAW 19-4 with 188 sport also has its merits, with logically the 1-1 draw a preferred scoreline at 31-4 with netbet.
