Bassarabad the each way pick at Lingfield on Monday
Our money is on a win for BASSARABAD at today’s 4.10 race at Lingfield
Trainer Tim Vaughan had to endure a bit of a lean spell during February, a month he failed to train a winner. But in recent days the Welsh handler is in hot form with Tanit River, Champagne Chaser and Fields Of Glory getting their heads in front over the last week. Champagne Chaser runs again today at Southwell in the 3.30pm and has a big shout under a 7lb penalty, but of his three runners today, BASSARABAD could be one to give the market leading duo a race of it in the 4.10pm at Lingfield.
Gary Moore’s Bagging Turf gets a helpful 7lb allowance in this race as a mare and she shaped with some promise when second at 20/1 to an easy odds-on winner on her hurdling debut at Towcester early last month. The two questions facing her today are what did she actually achieve there, and can she handle the heavy ground today? If both are answered in a positive light, then expect her to justify favouritism with a huge run.
The Evan Williams trained Just Bill is the other market leader and has a more experienced profile coming into the race with plenty of point form. The eight-year-old ran OK at Chepstow over two miles and seven furlongs last month and steps back in trip in this race which could help on the ground; which is described as “Heavy” at Lingfield today.
It does seem that both of these horses are far from what you could call bulletproof in terms of the form they have to offer. Bassarabad was pulled up in a three mile, one furlong handicap hurdle on heavy ground at Plumpton last time out in January when stepped up in trip and carrying top weight. It is easy enough to forgive that effort. Before that though, the five-year-old showed up well at both Aintree and Chepstow is useful handicap races over shorter and the two miles and three furlongs at Lingfield today are likely to be far more suitable.
Given the form of the stable, Bassarabad is returning to the track after a break at a good time and if leaving that Plumpton run behind him, can certainly give backers a good run for their money today.
