Tip: Both teams to score – no @ 13/10 with Betfair
Spurs travel to Germany to take on Leverkusen in the Champion League’s most open group this week. Still unbeaten in the Premier League, Mauricio Pochettino’s men seem to be growing in confidence as the season goes on. They will have cursed the timing of the international break, coming as it did immediately after an impressive win over hitherto unbeaten Manchester City.
Even if momentum took a slight hit, Spurs will play without fear against Bayer. The club have a good record against German opposition, winning seven out of 13 games, losing just four times. They actually traveled to Leverkusen ten years ago for a UEFA Cup tie and won 1-0.
A similar result would be fantastic for Spurs, who lost their opening game at home to Monaco. Having followed that up with a hard-fought 1-0 victory in Moscow, they sit ahead of Leverkusen in the group table after the Germans stumbled to successive draws. In both games they were ahead. Roger Schmidt will want his side to hold what they have if they indeed get anything here.
Both teams play a similar brand of football so we can expect an energetic and entertaining match. It will actually be really interesting seeing how these teams combat one another. Leverkusen have a reputation as a big game team in Germany, having taken points off Bayern Munich on numerous occasions over the last few seasons. Before the international break, they beat Dortmund 2-0.
That’s the same Dortmund who are famed for their high-energy pressing and all-action displays. We have a feeling that it won’t be a goal-fest but a tactician’s beautiful fantasy.
Spurs will be without Toby Alderweireld after the defender picked up an injury against West Brom at the weekend. Eric Dier is expected to replace him at centre-half. Harry Kane also remains injured so Spurs will to rely on Heung-Min Son to steal points from his old side. Kyle Walker hasn’t travelled with the team because he’s being rested.
Predicted Bayer Leverkusen team: Leno, Heinrichs, Toprak, Tah, Wendell, Aranguiz, Kampl, Calhanoglu, Mehmedi, Brandt, Hernandez
Predicted Spurs team: Lloris, Trippier, Vertonghen, Dier, Rose, Wanyama, Dembele, Alli, Eriksen, Lamela, Son
