There’s a king in town this weekend – but we’re talking Guadalajara, rather than outside Buckingham Palace.
Canelo Alvarez returns to fight in his hometown for the first time in 11 years and has invited a Briton, John Ryder, to share his special day.
Will Ryder cause a massive upset and create his own Coronation?
Check out the legs below, with action in Birmingham, UK, also tickling our fancy:
10pm Saturday - Joshua Buatsi to beat Pawel Stepien in Rounds 1-6
Buatsi recently jumped promotional ships from DAZN to BOXXER so will be looking to put on a show live on Sky Sports in Birmingham.
The Londoner is unbeaten in 16, but his Polish opponent can also boast an unbeaten slate despite fighting solely in his home country.
Due to this, Stepien is a relatively unknown quantity, but at 32 years old it’s safe to say he would have been ‘discovered’ by now if he had any real ambitions at the top of the light-heavyweight tree.
There are plenty of questions hanging over the head of Buatsi so we think he’s going to be gunning for some answers in quick fashion.
12.15am Sunday - Oleksandr Gvozdyk to beat Ricards Bolotniks by Decision/Technical Decision
After years out of the ring, Oleksandr Gvozdyk is back.
The Ukrainian spoke to freebets.com this week and admitted “I received an invitation from Canelo to be one of his sparring partners for his fight against Bivol.
“I spent a whole camp with him, and was happy with my performance, and the idea of coming back came up automatically.
“I still have a lot to achieve in boxing. I am aiming to become a two-time world champion and would love to earn the right to fight against the division’s best, Artur Beterbiev and Dmitry Bivol.”
The jury may still be out on Gvozdyk’s potential ceiling upon his return, but the slugger Bolotniks looks tailor-made for him.
A wide win on the scorecards for Gvozdyk makes up leg two of our acca.
4am Sunday - Canelo Alvarez to beat John Ryder in Rounds 7-12
It’s a big, big ask for John Ryder to travel out to Mexico and get a win over Canelo Alvarez.
The super-middleweight king has is using this defence as a warm up to a rematch with Dmitry Bivol and we’re not sure that the “Gorilla” is going to be able to last the distance.
Ryder is an excellent fighter in his own right; he is tough, stands, trades and has a the work rate to ask a few questions of Canelo, but the Mexican is one of the very best to lace them up.
With no route to victory, suffering a barrage of Canelo left hooks, we’re expecting Ryder’s corner to pull him out late in the contest and save him for another day.
