5/2 Big Boxing Weekend Double. - Saturday 10th September

Weekend boxing double featuring Claressa Shields, Savannah Marshall, Mikaela Mayer and Alycia Baumgardner

London’s O2 Arena plays host to a historic night of boxing on Saturday evening.

For the first time in history, a full female card of boxing will be televised and it’s Claressa Shields and Savannah Marshall who are headlining the show in a fight for the undisputed middleweight crown.

Women’s boxing has grown exponentially over the past few years culminating in a sell-out night of action in east London with a multitude of world titles on the line.

The co-main event is also dripping in gold, as Mikaela Mayer and Alycia Baumgardner collide for a unification fight in the super-featherweight division.

We’ll be in London for this massive night of boxing and will attempt to land a juicy double to boot.

Mikaela Mayer to beat Alycia Baumgardner by Decision or Technical Decision - 8/15

These two have made no secret of their dislike for each other.

Mayer is the golden girl who rose to fame in the 2016 Olympics and has since gone on to unify the super-featherweight division and stretch her record to 17-0.

Baumgardner had to make it to the top via a different, harder route and has finally got her chance to “humble” Mayer in this unification bout.

Baumgardner is a big puncher – underlined by her 2021 win over Terri Harper – but Mayer’s Olympic schooling means her fundamentals are just that little bit sharper than the 28-year-old’s.

Mayer only has five wins by KO but to say she isn’t a puncher would be a real underestimation of her talent.

Mayer has been in the spotlight for much longer than Baumgardner and will be used to performing under this huge pressure. If the 2/1 underdog has a plan B, then she may be able to de-throne Mayer, but if not, we’re expecting the pedigree to shine through.

A Mikaela Mayer win on the scorecards is too tempting to ignore.

Claressa Shields to beat Savannah Marshall by Decision or Technical Decision - 13/10

Claressa Shields v Savannah Marshall is priced up as a pure 50/50 bout and it’s easy to see why.

In the away fighter, Shields, we have the self-proclaimed “GWOAT” of women’s boxing. The American is a two-time Olympic gold medalist and has achieved all there is to achieve in the sport of boxing.

What she lacks in punch power she makes up for with a sharp tongue and her Floyd Mayweather-esque style of boxing without getting hit has led her to a 12-0 professional record, winning world titles in three different weight classes.

Savannah Marshall is much more raw, but importantly, holds a win over Shields in the amateurs – the only defeat the American has ever suffered inside a ring.

Marshall is a big, big puncher in the middleweight division and has honed her craft under the watchful eye of trainer Peter Fury over the past couple of years.

If Marshall can land on Shields then it may drag the American into her deepest waters to date, but with only 20 minutes of boxing to find that KO blow, we slightly favour the defensive, counter-attacking style of Shields over the 10 round distance.

BONUS TIP: Claressa Shields v Savannah Marshall draw at 10/1 with bet365

Both priced at 10/11 with bet365, it’s worth a small stake on the draw in the Shields-Marshall fight.

With two-minute rounds, it can be harder for the judges to find winners to each stanza and contradicting cards wouldn’t be a surprise in London.

Whether judges favour the power and aggression of Marshall or the defence and tactics of Shields may decide who wins this contest, and at 10/1 with bet365 it’s worth considering both ladies’ hands getting raised setting up a lucrative rematch...
