Carl Frampton continues world title path with testing Nonito Donaire obstacle in Belfast
Carl Frampton (24-1, 14 KOs) will look to take a step closer to another world title shot in 2018 when he faces Nonito Donaire (38-4, 24 KOs) in Belfast this weekend.
‘The Jackal’ will return to the SSE Arena on Saturday night, the scene of his comeback success against Mexican Horacio Garcia last November.
That night on home soil Frampton rallied to a 10-round unanimous decision triumph, the first outing since losing his unbeaten record and former WBA ‘Super’ featherweight title to Leo Santa Cruz last January.
After returning to winning ways under the guidance of new trainer Jamie Moore and promoter Frank Warren, the 31-year-old will next take to the ring as the odds-on 1/6 favourite with Paddy Power against experienced challenger Donaire.
Although, the four-weight world champion represents a tricky and testing roadblock for Frampton in his pursuit of another world title success, and Donaire is 4/1 with Betfair to shatter those dreams with a shock win on his travels.
With this being a WBO interim featherweight title bout, a triumph for Frampton on home territory will see him set up a mouth-watering clash with full title holder Oscar Valdez.

Crack at WBO champion Valdez on the line for Frampton on home soil
With high stakes on the line in his own backyard, Frampton will need a strong showing in order to get past the threat of Filipino star Donaire.
The two-weight world titlist is already widely considered to be the best fighter to have ever come out of Ireland, but rallying to another belt would help solidify his legacy.
After outpointing game Mexican Garcia late last year, Frampton is likely to face another testing encounter in his latest Filipino opponent, and he is 4/7 with William Hill to earn the nod of the judges once again.
The home hero has failed to secure any knockout wins since moving up to 126lbs, with his last stoppage success coming against Chris Avalos back in 2015 during his super-bantamweight reign.
That looks unlikely of changing this weekend, with Donaire possessing a solid chin and he has been stopped just once in his career by Nicholas Walters in 2014. But Frampton is 11/4 with Paddy Power for an early finish here.
Meanwhile, ‘the Filipino Flash’ is 7/1 with Coral for a KO victory and 16/1 with Betfred to prevail on points in what will be his UK debut.
WBO bantamweight champion Zolani Tete (26-3, 21 KOs) also defends his current crown against Siboniso Gonya (48-2-2, 25 KOs) on the card, while rising Coalisland star Conrad Cummings (13-1-1, 6 KOs) faces Luke Keeler (13-2-1, 5 KOs).
A match-up with WBO titlist Valdez has been touted for some time now for Frampton and it’s one that would likely produce fireworks, but ‘the Jackal’ must first overcome the live threat of Donaire in Belfast this weekend.
