Cologne vs Borussia Monchengladbach preview, betting tips and prediction: Koln to enjoy rare victory
One of the biggest headlines of last weekend concerned renowned underdogs Benevento. The Serie A side, who became the first team ever to lose their opening 13 games in one of Europe’s top five leagues, waited 18 games for a win and then two came at once.
So who would begrudge them this stroke of fortune, an unlikely run of form? Probably Cologne.
For they, thanks to Benevento’s burst of wins, now have the worst record in Europe’s big five. Anchored to the bottom of the Bundesliga with just six points after one win and three draws, they return from their winter break to host Borussia Monchengladbach, a mighty foe.
While the opening of a kebab shop by club hero Lukas Podolski brought much-needed cheer to the city, fans are hungrier for points and will be desperate to see their side triumph this weekend.
Podolski has faith in the divine power of recovery and dismissed talk of relegation with half the season still to play. “I believe in miracles. It’s too early to talk about the second division. I’m calling on all the fans and the city to support the team as long as it’s possible [to stay in the Bundesliga],” he told German media as he watched his kebab empire grow.
Gladbach, who sit in sixth, are part of the chasing pack as Bayern run away with the title. Just two points separate them and second-placed Schalke, which will make the race for a Champions League place over the coming months fascinating.
Gladbach have a good record against Cologne but the hosts have been unlucky in recent meetings, as luck has abandoned them at various points throughout this season. They were on the wrong end of a one nil scoreline when they met on the opening day of the season. We think they’re due some luck.
