Confident Celtic Must Take Chance

Matt Le Tissier gives Freebets.com his thoughts and betting tips for the football season, Celtic travelling to Slovenia to face Maribor on Wednesday evening looking to reap the rewards of their recent UEFA Champions League reprieve.

The Scottish champions were handed a lifeline into Europe’s premier competition after being thumped 6-1 in a resounding defeat to Legia Warsaw in the third qualifying round, but Henning Berg’s victorious side were later expelled for fielding an ineligible player.

Appeals to UEFA and the Court of Arbitration had no affect on the situation and Celtic receive an unexpected second chance, manager Ronny Deila looking to follow in the footsteps of his predecessor Neil Lennon by bringing top-level football to Celtic Park once again.

Celtic put the controversy behind them last weekend to ease to a dominant 6-1 win of their own in their Scottish Premiership meeting against previously unbeaten Dundee, a display the new manager promised to deliver fans upon his arrival.

Matt Le Tissier Tips: “Celtic have been given a second chance, and are handy at 17/10 to win with Boylesports.

“Kris Commons was one of five players on target in their 6-1 drubbing of Dundee last weekend, and a fast start for Celtic could make his 13/2 first goalscorer odds with Ladbrokes look a good punt.”

Celtic will be without injured winger James Forrest and defender Adam Matthews, while the deal to bring in Wakaso Mubarakhas was not completed quite in time for his participation. Defender Efe Ambrose will arrive late for the Champions League play-off leg, after Celtic discovered he was not suspended for the tie after the Nigerian was sent off in the 4-1 defeat by Legia Warsaw in Poland.

Macedonia international Agim Ibraimi was kept from several clubs, including Celtic, after signing a new three-year contract with Maribor, the winger available for Wednesday’s clash after spending last season on loan to Cagliari in Italy’s Serie A.

Brazilian Marcos Tavares meanwhile is also expected to participate, Maribor’s all-time goalscorer having surpassed 300 appearances for the Slovenians.

The match from Ljudski vrt kicks off on Wednesday 20 August at 7.45pm, Maribor hosting Celtic in their first Champions League play-off leg which will be shown live on Sky Sports 5.
