Cricket: England v New Zealand Preview & Betting Tips

Even though England are 2-0 up ahead of the series finale at Headingley, this will be far from a dead rubber for Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum. They will be going for broke

Jonny Bairstow’s century was an innings for the ages as England chased 299 in only 50 overs on day five at Trent Bridge to wrap up the series last Tuesday.

Bairstow’s 136 off 92 balls, including his century off 77, mesmerised England fans just a couple of days before the ODI team went and racked up a world record 498-4 against the Netherlands in Amstelveen.

Two nil up, but there will be no let up, and I expect England to heap more misery on a dishevelled New Zealand who have not only lost two Tests but have had Covid disruption.

England are 11/10 with SpreadEx to claim the victory in Leeds, and it is a price I would be keen to take. Before looking at the odds, I was expecting them to be shorter than that, which in truth they are with a number of firms.

Lees back on home turf - and the signs are good

I have thought for a couple of weeks, ‘I wouldn’t mind betting Alex Lees scores runs at Headingley’.

Here is an opening batter who came through the Yorkshire system, was highly rated, won two Championship titles with them before leaving for Durham in 2018 after a heavy loss of form. But that form was re-found in the North East before earning an England Test debut in the Caribbean earlier this year.

In the second Test at Trent Bridge last week, Lees, whose quality has never been questioned by his home county - he just needed a circuit breaking parting of the ways, posted 67 and 44 and looked in excellent order without cashing in.

And I quite like the look of a quartet of prices on his success with bet365.

The two I like most are the 5/4 on the left-hander to score a fifty in the match and 8/1 on him to score a century in the match.

With a good budget, I would also be a bit more adventurous and look at the 12/5 they have on him to score a fifty in the first innings and 10/1 on a first-innings ton.
