Big problems on the horizon for the loser of this ‘Ashes’ T20 clash, with both heading into it on the back of a won one, lost one record

Well, well, well!

Of course yesterday’s England defeat to Ireland - by five runs on DLS - was a shock, and one I didn’t see coming.

But, when you think about it, it kind of sums up England’s year in white ball cricket. While they have produced some outstanding performances, they have also served up some dross since since losing to the West Indies in a five-match January T20 series in Barbados.

And now there is very little room for manoeuvre in a jam-packed Group One as the race for the semi-finals hots up.

In his post match interview after the Ireland game, captain Jos Buttler described Australia as “must win”. And you can see why.

Whoever loses this one will be searching for favours from elsewhere to reach the last four with only two more group fixtures remaining.

England remain the better of these two sides

As long as England learn from this defeat and don’t dwell on it, I still expect them to be ok.

I rate them more highly than Australia as a T20 side, and let’s not forget that the hosts will be under just as much pressure - slightly more so given their poor net run-rate.

An England victory is a best price of 1/1 with bet365, and I would be taking that. I’m not sure how you can justify the Aussies being favourites (best price of 10/11). Both have suffered similar chastening defeats in this competition so far, while England won the pre-tournament series 2-0.

Maxwell to end barren run on home ground

I’m very interested in Glenn Maxwell’s player performance with bet365 in this fixture, which has him at over or under 27.5 for 5/6. I would be going over.

Maxwell hasn’t scored a T20 international fifty since last March, a run of 26 matches. But he has topped this mark in the first two matches over this tournament with scores of 28 and 23 plus a wicket with his off-spinners.

Liam Livingstone’s three wickets for England against Ireland indicate that part-time spin could be useful at the MCG, plus Melburnian Maxwell is an absolute gun in the field and is always likely to snare a catch or two.

Remember, it is a point a run, 10 per catch and 20 per wicket on the player performance.

Dawid can be a Malan with a plan

England’s classy number three Dawid Malan may just be the man to carry his side home at the cavernous MCG.

This is a ground where hitting the gaps and manoeuvring the field are key to victory, something which Malan does very well.

I think he can be England’s top run-scorer for the second game running, at a juicy 9/2 with Ladbrokes.

He was far from his best the other night and still top-scored with 35, and I can see him doing it again here to continue some encouraging recent form. He has gone beyond 20 in six of his last eight T20 internationals, including scores of 78 not out and 82.

Remain steadfast on England and you can get nearly fives on tournament win

Very rarely do you go through a tournament without a setback, so let’s hope England’s was just one in isolation and not the beginning of the end.

I expect it to be the former rather than the latter, and would be interested in SBK’s 24/5 (5.80) on Jos Buttler and co to go on and win the World Cup.

That is compared to the 7/2 (4.50) they were before a ball was bowled.
