- Bangladesh v England T20 International series, first game (of three)
- Thursday March 9, 2023 (9am UK)
- Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium, Chittagong
Since beating Pakistan in the T20 World Cup final at Melbourne in November, England’s white ball team have tackled a couple of one-day series, losing in South Africa before - over the last week - winning in Bangladesh.
But this will be their first return to T20 action since Jos Buttler raised the trophy.
It is incredible to think that tomorrow’s series opener will only be the second ever T20 meeting between these two nations.
England won the first, a World Cup clash in Abu Dhabi in October 2021 when they chased down 125 for the loss of only two wickets inside 15 overs. Tymal Mills claimed three wickets and Jason Roy crashed 61.
Neither of those players are in the squad for this series, and there a number of other star names missing. But I still expect England to have too much for their hosts.
I’m not so sure, though, I would be taking the 2/5 which is widely available on a straight England win in game one. Instead, let’s look for value elsewhere.
William Hill provide it with three-fold combination in their #YourOdds section, starting with an England win.
They are offering 19/10 on England to win as well as the visitors to have the highest opening partnership and to hit the most sixes. I think it is very realistic to expect all to happen.
Rash is all the rave and Salt a tasty price for top order success
Bet365 have a trio of prices on player success in this fixture which interest me.
The first is for Bangladesh left-arm pacer Mustafizur Rahman to be his country’s top bowler at 7/2.
The Fizz, as they call him, is three wickets away from 100 in T20 internationals. Only Shakib Al Hasan has reached that mark for the hosts.
And while Rahman only claimed one wicket in the three recent ODIs, he did claim seven wickets in three Bangladesh Premier League T20 matches to help Comilla Victorians win the title midway through last month.
Top England Bowler - Adil Rashid
The second is for Adil Rashid at 4/1 to be England’s top bowler in the series opener. He is just behind a quartet of joint favourites at 7/2 - Archer, Jordan, Topley and Wood.
But compare that to Betfair, for example, and the leg-spinner is their 11/4 favourite.
Rashid has just come off a player of the series award in the ODIs, claiming eight wickets in three matches.
Top England Batsman - Phil Salt
Opener Phil Salt is someone who I can also see enjoying a good day.
He is the subject of an attractive looking price boost from the same company to be England’s top batter in the series opener. They have him at 9/2.
I would be taking that every single time on a genuine opener in a T20 fixture. He may not have loads of runs behind in the last few months, but the Lancashire man has not been in bad form - he played in the recent South African T20 competition - and is full of quality.
He hit an encouraging 35 off 25 balls at the top of the order in Monday’s final ODI.
