Jos is now well and truly the boss after captain Morgan stands down

England v India

Vitality IT20 series, first match (of three)

Thursday July 7, 2022, 6pm

The Ageas Bowl

It was no great surprise to see Eoin Morgan stand down as white ball captain and retire from international cricket last week.

But, no disrespect to Morgan because he’s been phenomenal - a legend, England should be better for it given his recent form.

In terms of Jos Buttler’s first series in charge, both sides are missing players due to scheduling, with the one-off Test series finishing only yesterday.

But England look much stronger, and I would fully expect them to bring home the 8/11 on a victory, which is on offer with William Hill amongst other firms.

With new captain Jos Buttler leading a team including Jason Roy, Liam Livingstone, Dawid Malan, Chris Jordan and Matt Parkinson amongst others, I expect them to have too much for a talented but inexperienced Indian side.

Buttler to make a standout start to captaincy career

Indian fans will know all too well what a superstar new England captain Jos Buttler is following his recent form for beaten Indian Premier League finalists Rajasthan Royals, scoring a whopping 863 runs in the competition.

Since returning from India, he has posted scores of 162 not out, 86 not out and 42 in ODIs for England against Netherlands and Lancashire against Worcestershire in the Blast.

Therefore, I’m more than happy to take the 5/2 Ladbrokes have on Buttler to be England’s top batter in the game and also the 9/4 bet365 have on him to score a half-century in the match.

If you think those will come in, consider the 7/1 bet365 have on the Lancashire man to be player of the match as well.

Strength of Samson means 4/1 shot has appeal

In recent IPL campaigns, I have loved watching Rajasthan captain Sanju Samson bat. He mixes finesse and power superbly.

India have played three warm-up matches for this series; one against Ireland and two against county sides Derbyshire and Northamptonshire.

He has opened the batting in each of them, posting scores of 77, 38 and nought. The 77 was against the Irish last week and is a career best in 14 T20I appearances so far.

Now, Samson’s place at the top of the order alongside Ishan Kishan is seemingly dependent on captain Rohit Sharma’s availability following a bout of Covid. There are suggestions this game might come a couple of days too soon for him.

So, with that in mind, I’m happy to take the 4/1 bet365 have on Samson to be India’s top run-scorer in Southampton.
